Cohort 3 Session 2

Session 2 - Workflow

Exploring different tools to develop an effective practice around workflow.

Different tools we looked at:

Google Keep: I already use this for work and personal use and it was great to learn new things I could do with it.
Lectures/Keynotes & Seminars - take a photo of slides or notes on the screen, add to note and select "grab text from image", this will grab any text in the image and transfer it as a note and now you have an image and the text.

Google Hangout/Meet: video calling, screen sharing, and group chats. Simple to use, invited Shiralee, Migi and Roy for a hangout next week. Invites are set up in Calendar.

Video Conferencing: Zoom - this is one that Migi has used previously. Allows everyone that has joined the group to be visible on the screen.

Taming your Tabs: apps/extensions that can help to keep a tab of your tabs!

OneTab - will close tabs that are open and save them.
Toby mini - useful for organising sets of tabs together
Bookmarks on your Toolbar - can organise your bookmarks into folders, eg. Companies

*Quick tip for Macs - 'Mac moments'
Click command + spacebar - will bring up spotlight search.
Should quit Chrome when you are finished - fills your computer up with unnecessary things.
Shut down your computer daily, disc doctor cleans your files, etc.
Clean my mac

Create - Hangouts and Summer Learning Journey.

We had to select a blog post we liked and within our group create a hangout and record our hangout using Quicktime player. I will need more practice with this - setting up the hangout, and then navigating between QuickTime and mute and unmute, so it is ready to record.  Record without headphones - if you record with headphones you will only record your voice and not the rest of the conversation of your group.
I can see some opportunities for this to be used in the classroom by the students with sharing their work or discussions around pieces of work.

I also learned how to embed a video onto a blogpost.
Open your video in a new window, select the 3 dots and select 'embed item'. Copy this and paste into HTML on your blog.

Manaiakalani Pedagogy - focus on LEARN/AKO

Digital Fluency and Teacher effectiveness need to work together side by side for accelerated learning to happen.

R ECOGNISE - What does effective teaching look like?

A MPLIFY -      because of the digital tools available things can be easily shared between groups and be more accessible.

T URBOCHARGE -  Doing things we couldn't do before, eg. google hangouts.

E FFECTIVE PRACTICE

What does the Learning Process/Effective Practice look like at Waikowhai?

Effective teaching practice hasn't changed with the introduction of digital devices, teacher roles within the classroom remain the same - devices can help to enhance acceleration.

When working and thinking about a 1 to 1 environment there are some taxonomies to consider.
SAMR model - Bloom's Taxonomy - modified for the digital world -

Rewindable learning - creating learning resources which the students and whanau can access at any time, like a virtual classroom.
Shiralee and I talked about how we are doing this in Te Waka Ako. At the moment we have access to documents and work on the syndicate site. Do we need to think about adding video sessions of group sessions etc?

  1. Hi Rachelle, You have captured the day thoroughly and added some valuable wonderings from your own context. I will be interested in your feedback next week about how you developed the ideas you discussed with Shiralee.
Good to hear that you picked up some other ideas from group members (eg Migi) too.

  2. HI Rachelle, I agree, the session gave a lot of handy tips throughout the day. I personally enjoy using Google Keep, but was wondering if I would be able to use it in the classroom, like a personal checklist for each child of what they have to do for the day. Especially for students with individual learning plans. It seems easy enough and will give them the control of ticking when they have done the work. Have you tried using it in you class in any way? Kind Regards Alida
